The ‘Reforestation Project with Native and Exotic Species on Degraded Lands in Northeast Argentina’ is currently undergoing carbon credit certification under the Verra VCS and CCB standards. The project is managed by Aike, a consulting subsidiary of Vista Energy, specialized in carbon offset projects.
The project’s practices stand out for promoting innovative reforestation designs on degraded lands, combining native and exotic species to produce high-quality timber and other non-timber products, such as resin. In the long term, the goal is to create new patches of forest with native species exclusively.
The project’s initial activities began in July 2022 with the growth of 2,331 hectares in degraded pastures. Initially, 40% of the area was planted with mixed stands including native species, and 60% with pure stands of non-native pines, primarily based on the topography of the planted area. As it is a grouped project, new fields will be included throughout the project’s accreditation period (40 years). They will be located in the province of Corrientes, Argentina, and may also include areas in the contiguous south of the province of Misiones.
The forestry project will contribute to the objectives of sustainable development. Among these, it can be highlighted the restoration of ecosystem services such as soil protection, water runoff regulation, biodiversity, and forest connectivity. Additionally, it will generate and collect knowledge about the management and restoration of forests with native species. Furthermore, it will promote the prevention of degradation of nearby native forests, as the extraction of native timber from these areas will be reduced, being replaced by timber supplied by the project.
At ProSustentia, we are providing technical assistance in the process of carbon credit certification under Verra VCS + CCB. Currently, the project is in the validation stage, having moved beyond the public comment stage. Want to learn more? Visit this link
