The validation process of the “Sustainable Silvopastoral Producers of the Argentine Pampas” project began under the new VCS VM0047 (Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation) methodology . This is the first project in South America to be registered in “Under validation” status with this methodology, which replaces the historically used Clean Development Mechanism. The objective of the project is to remove greenhouse gases (GHG) through silvopastoral systems. This contributes to climate change mitigation while promoting positive impacts on ecosystems.
The project began in the fields “La Negra”, “La Negrita” and “La Florida”, located in the departments of Suipacha and Carmen de Areco (Buenos Aires), where approximately 1,600 hectares of Eucalyptus are expected to be planted.
It is estimated that these fields will capture approximately 5,203 tCO2 per year for 30 years. In turn, the project will seek to incorporate other fields in Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, Córdoba and Buenos Aires, achieving greater GHG capture.
This project not only offers environmental benefits, but also social and economic ones.By including fields in areas where commercial forestry plantations are not common, it highlights the potential for creating a new value chain, generating new employment opportunities, in addition to the positive socio-environmental impacts of the project.
The project proponent is Comercio y Desarrollo S.A., which works in coordination with Establecimientos La Negra S.A., creating synergy between the companies. In addition, this project is part of a Research and Development Agreement involving INTA, regional universities, and private companies. This R&D component ensures that the project activities are implemented with an innovative and sustainable approach.
ProSustentia is in charge of carrying out the carbon sequestration certification process of the project, according to Verra VCS voluntary standards. This process includes the project description, validation and verification up to the issuance of carbon credits. We are proud to be part of this pioneering process in the region!
